‘NBC Nightly News’ to be available on the Internet

Posted by Joel on Monday, October 31st, 2005

It seems as fast as I can write these posts, more and more mainstream networks are coming online.

First was ABC and iTunes, then Comedy Central and its Motherload.net – now ‘NBC Nightly News’ will be shown on the Internet.

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) it seems, has finally reached the tipping point.

The real question is though, whether this is going to be a truly portable experience. Public broadcasters like the BBC and CBC has been streaming their news broadcasts for several years now, but consuming that content has always meant sitting down and watching it in front of your computer.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Big Three follow the streaming model or the download model for their shows.

I, for one, hope for the latter. Wouldn’t it be cool to dive into an archive of past “60 Minutes” segments for example, and be able to download and relive classic moments and interviews?

What I’m getting at here is real “Long Tail” economics stuff. This is a great opportunity for networks to monetize their extensive back catalogs of content. If it was done efficiently and affordably, I think people would be all over it.
